First it was the European Constitution, rejected because France could not get its act together. Now it seems like enlargement is likely to meet a similar fate, with French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy refusing to grant the Republic of Macedonia candidate status – see this article. Blazy’s reason: because the rules on whether the EU can accept more members are not clear! And who is responsible for that, Mr Douste-Blazy? Would that be – oh – the French for messing up the Treaty of Nice with long late night wrangles over voting weights? Or the French that rejected the European Constitution? Or – shock horror – the French who have made next to no effort to explain to their population about the beneift of enlargement? 2007 cannot come soon enough to get rid of this unpleasant and rotten administration in a country at the ‘heart'(?) of Europe!
