Transatlantic geopolitical battles came to a head this past week, as the European Commission finally fined X €120 million under the Digital Services Act. Musk’s response: to demand the EU be abolished (a stance backed by ex-Russian President Medvedev, also on X). At least Radek Sikorski had a decent response – shown in the main screenshot here.
Peculiarly we then discovered that the European Commission still had an advertising account with X, which was then suspended, as X alleged the Commission was exploiting a problem with their ad composer.
In addition to this, I simply wanted to assess how members of the European Commission are approaching all of this. Below is a list of what they are all doing on X, correct as of 7th December 2025.
24 of the 27 Commissioners have posted on X in the last week
1 (Albuquerque) has never been on X, 1 (Ribera) has stopped, 1 (McGrath) has paused but it is unclear why
If European Digital Sovereignty is to mean anything, it ought to mean NOT posting on a platform owned and run by a fascist intent on undermining the EU.
And don’t reply with the bullshit you have to be on X for “balance” or “reach” – the rules are stacked against you as a Commissioner from the outset.
Yes, some Commissioners are using other tools as well (Bluesky, Mastodon, LinkedIn etc.) but my point is simply this: there is no moral justification whatsoever to stay on X. Doing so is moral cowardice.
